Fragiles – Entrelacs

2021 Part of the Fragiles series, 'Entrelacs' explores the quiet beauty of imperfection, memory and transformation. Delicate shapes of Japanese ginwashi paper emerge against natural linen, defined by hand embroidery and a restrained use of colour. The cotton thread used in this work originates from discarded clothing scraps. Removed, reclaimed and given a new purpose, these threads carry subtle traces of a previous life. Their transformation reflects one of the recurring ideas within Fragiles: that what is worn, imperfect or seemingly insignificant can become something precious through care and attention. Drawing on my background in the conservation of works on paper, the work brings together material, gesture and preservation. The translucent fibres of the ginwashi contrast with the tactile linen and embroidered contours, creating a quiet tension between fragility and strength, permanence and change. Rather than concealing the irregularities of the materials, the work allows them to remain visible. Each fibre and stitch becomes part of its history, a meditation on the traces objects carry with them and the possibility of giving materials a new life.
